Can I merge an old account with my new one?

My old account has all my MCSE stuff for Windows 2000. I can log into the old account and see all my old Certs without issue. I have a newer account with all my newer achievements and would like to merge the two accounts or have my old certs applied to my new account.

From what I've been reading it is possible I'm just unsure how to begin the process...

Hello William.

Welcome to Microsoft’s Community.

We understand that you need help Merging your old Profile into your new one. We will gladly assist.

Please know that due to improvements to our security processes, we cannot merge two Learn Profiles that are associated with two different personal email accounts, or MSAs.

That being said, we are unable to directly assist you with the merge process due to security policies. Instead, we can provide you with a short guide in which you can self-manage this process on your end.

First, allow us to share the following document: Microsoft Learn frequently asked questions (FAQs) | Microsoft Learn

Can I merge two profiles of mine into one?

Yes! Assume you have profile A and profile B, you're able to merge your completions and achievements of profile B into profile A by clicking "add account" on the profile settings page when signed into Profile A. After you merge accounts, only profile A will exist as both profiles learning history will be combined. The merging logic is as following:

  • Your learning history, certification data, and achievements are merged, with duplicates removed, from profile B into profile A.

  • Your Q&A contributions and activities are merged, with duplicates removed, from profile B into profile A.

  • Your linked accounts are merged from profile B into profile A. Note: if the limit of "up to five school or work accounts and one personal account" is exceeded during the merge process, your merge request will be canceled. If this happens, you'll need to resolve this issue before trying again.

  • Your saved items and joined challenges will be merged, with duplicates removed, from profile B into profile A.

  • Private profile mode will be enabled if any of the two profiles has this setting turned on.

  • All other settings will remain unchanged in profile A and editable on profile settings page anytime.

Have in mind that you cannot merge two Learn profiles that are associated each to a different personal MSA. The following profile merge options can be done by connecting the two accounts in the Account Management section of Learn Settings:

  1. Merge a Learn profile containing a work or school account (AAD/Entra) with a second profile containing a personal email (MSA).

  2. Merge a Learn profile containing a work or school account (AAD/Entra) with a second profile containing a work or school account (MSA).

If both accounts are personal and considering that you can have up to five school or work accounts and only one personal account linked to your Microsoft Learn profile, you could try adding a work/school account to one of the Profiles > Deleting the personal MSA > Merging the remaining Profiles.

If you have a work or school (AAD) account associated with your Learn profile:

  1. Please visit Microsoft Learn.

  2. Sign in using your work or school account (AAD).

  3. Click on your user icon, located at the upper right corner of the screen. and select "Settings."

  4. Under the "Account management" section, remove your personal Microsoft account (MSA).

  5. After removing your personal account, click "Add account" and sign in using your desired Microsoft account (MSA).

If you do not have a work or school (AAD) account associated with your Learn profile:

  1. Please visit Microsoft Learn.

  2. Sign in with your current personal Microsoft account (MSA).

  3. Click on your user icon, located at the upper right corner of the screen, and select "Settings."

  4. Under the "Account management" section, select "Add account."

  5. Sign in using your work or school account (AAD) to add it to your Learn profile.

  6. Sign out of Microsoft Learn.

  7. Sign into Microsoft Learn using your work or school account (AAD).

  8. Return to the "Account management" section to remove your personal Microsoft account (MSA).

  9. After removing your personal account, click "Add account" and sign in using your desired personal Microsoft account (MSA).

By design, your Learn profile can only be associated with one personal Microsoft account (MSA) and up to five work or school accounts (AAD) at a time. This means that, to remove your personal account, you must first add a work account to your profile.

We hope this information is clear and helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hello William.

Thank you for your reply.

By design, your Learn profile can be associated with one personal Microsoft account (MSA) and up to five work or school accounts (AAD) at a time.

This means it is not possible to link two different personal accounts to a Learn profile. To update the personal account linked to your Learn profile, you must first connect a work or school account (AAD) as stated in our previous reply.

We have shared the steps to create a Microsoft 365 trial account in case you do not have a work account for this process, as we understand that not every candidate may possess this type of account or may not feel comfortable doing it with the one provided by their organization.

Current Microsoft 365 trials last one month. We advise cancelling your subscription before it ends if you do not wish to use it in the future, as well as to avoid unnecessary billing.

Once your subscription ends, access to Microsoft services and products linked to your newly created account will be stopped.

It is important to note that this account is not intended to remain in your Learn profile, as it must be added to your profile only to remove the current personal account and replace it with a new one.

After adding your new personal account, you can remove the work account you created for this process with no negative impact to your profile.

To remove and replace your personal account, please follow the steps below:

  1. Visit Microsoft Learn.

  9. After removing your personal account, click "Add account" and sign in using your preferred personal Microsoft account (MSA).

Please let us know if these steps worked for you or if you run into any trouble. We will be happy to help.

We hope this information helps resolve your concern. If so, please let us know by selecting "Yes" where it says, "Was this reply helpful?" located at the lower right corner of this post.

If we do not receive a response, the thread will be closed and locked after one business day.

Sincerely,

If I delete my new profile so I am only left with my old one can I change the email address on the remaining profile?

There's only a few badges and a trophy on my new profile. No actual certifications yet. I'm ok with deleting it.

Hello William.

Thank you for your response.

We do not recommend deleting information, as it cannot be recovered in the future. Also, the issue you are facing will be the same, because the email is a personal account and cannot be added to your main Profile.

Our previous response, was the best option we could find for a case like yours.

Creating a temporary work email > adding it to your personal Profile > deleting the previous personal email > adding the current personal address > deleting the work email.

We hope this information was useful to attend your inquiry. If you have further questions, please let us know.

If the assistance given solved your request, please let us know by clicking “yes” on the question below. Bear in mind that if we do not receive a response within one business day, the thread will be closed.
