Server 2012 & AZURE

1) I am a student who is about to complete my masters in 10 months. I want to become Windows/IT/System/network      Administrator (end goal is to become a administrator). As part of that, I am about to start learning Server 2012 and 2016. But I found that the certifications related to those are retiring in 4 months. Would it be good to invest my time in learning those or should I start AZURE certifications?

Hi Tiru Pendyala,

Yes, it would be better to start investing your time in the new role based certification for Azure.

Meanwhile, if you are still interested in pursuing the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 and MCSA: Windows Server 2016, you can take the required exams prior to their retirement which is on January 31, 2021.

More information about the retirement of MCSA. MCSE & MCSD can be found on this Microsoft Blog.

If you wish to pursue the role-based certification based on MCSA: Windows Server 2012 or 2016, below are the recommended path:

MCSA: Windows Server 2012: Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert

MCSA: Windows Server 2016: Microsoft Certified: Azure Security Engineer Associate

Once you have completed all exam requirements for a certification, your profile will be updated within 24-48 hours.

You may check our Browse Certifications and Exams page to see all the certifications that we offer. You can filter these certification by technology, roles, and level depending on your desire. Filters are located at the left side of the page.

Hi Majorie_T

Thanks for your reply.

As I understood, Microsoft 2012/R2, 2016 server supported until Oct 2023, Dec 2027 respectively. So, That means the companies which are using Server 2012/R2 still use those servers until 2023. These companies still need the people who knows those technologies. Some companies might migrate to AZURE before 2023 ( it's not my concern).

Q1) Am I understood correctly (the above statements) ??

If I learn 2012/R2 & 2016 and got those respective certifications then in the next 1-2 years I can do the AZURE certifications.

Q2) Is that a good Path ??

Q3) I read in microsoft support forum that we can run 2012/R2, 2016 server in AZURE. Is installing, configuring and administration of those servers in a local physical server any different than doing it in the AZURE ???

Hi Tiru Pendyala,

Most of our candidates still take the Server 2012/2016 path before they retire so they can add it on their transcript as a proof of mastering this technology.

You can start focusing your studies on Azure now or later, it is still up to you if you or your employer if they require it for your job.

For your last question, we also do not have the details. Please note that the team that you have reached is Microsoft Certification Program. We handle concerns related your exams, certificates and certification profile.
