MCSA: SQL 2016 BI Development replacement

Exams 70-767 (Implementing a Data Warehouse using SQL) and 70-768 (Developing SQL Data Models)  are needed to obtain the MCSA SQL 2016 BI Development replacement certification.

According to MS Learn website (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/learn/certifications/mcsa-sql2016-business-intelligence-certification) the certification retires on January 31, 2021.

I am very intrested in getting this certification but I don't want to start learning for a certification that retires in 6 month.

What are the replacements for these exams (70-767 and 70-768) in the new role based learning model? I can't find them.

Hello Frank vd S,

I appreciate your interest with the MCSA: SQL 2016 BI Development certification.

Please be advised that the exams 70-676 and 768 doesn’t have a replacement in the new role base certifications. If you are eyeing for more recent Role-based certifications we have that includes the technology and competencies found on the said certificate, please see the recommended path on the image below.

To find more information about the new role-based certifications and updates, please visit the Microsoft Learning Blog.

I hope this helps.

I am sorry but my question is not answered.

I have searched this website for answers and it looks there are many people with a similar questions as I do. I looks like everybody gets more or less the same answer as I did “there is no replacement, here is the picture for the new role-based certification options”.

I am sorry to say this but that is not good service to your customers.

There are many different roles and job titles in the data management and analytics world, each with its own required skills set. You cannot cover all them with 5 standard roles. People have jobs that could be a mixture of 2 or 3 of the roles Microsoft has envisioned. The same is true for other parts of the IT business.

It is almost impossible to browse these standard roles, try to figure out which skills are covered in each of the exams and then try do decide which exam you need to take for your job.

In that respect, the old certification system was a lot easier to work with.

It seems many people have similar issues as I do. Therefor, I would recommend a website that maps the skills tested in the old exams to exams in the new role based system. As an example; I would like to type in 70-767 or 70-768, see the skills tested by these exams and get mapping to the new role based exams.

Hello Frank vd S,

Thank you for your patience throughout this process.

We just received the following information from our Support Team. Please refer to their response below:

  • Candidate is asking which certification matches skillset about different roles and job titles in data management analytics world?

“Data Modeling and Implementing a Data Warehouse is covered in Azure Data Engineer, and the most logic career/path evolution.”

  • Is there any website that maps skill tested for old exams to exams in new role based system?

“There’s no mapping exam to exam since there’s not always an exact correlation. Instead, please check out this Microsoft Learn blog post: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-learn-blog/mcsa-mcsd-mcse-certifications-retire-with-continued-investment/ba-p/1489670 that announces the last phase of the retirement of MCSA/D/E certifications. You’ll find recommended certification paths to role-based certifications mapped from the MCSA/D/E certifications that were announced as being retired in the blog; it doesn’t capture all certifications in the program that were already announced prior.”
